Law about religious holiday decorations?

I'm having a hard time finding out specific information about the legality of displaying religious decorations in common spaces, such as the lobby of an apartment building. Does anyone have any references or sources I can consult? Our apartment building manageress has been putting up crosses for holidays like Christmas and Easter, and we want to have the official word with which to compel her to stop.

I believe if it's privately owned or funded, they can do whatever they want in that area.

Speaking of which: In San Francisco tonight, I saw a public middle school selling "Christmas trees" as a fund raiser for the school.

I have more of a problem with not being able to properly fund our schools than with the fact of them selling trees. Why should students be selling anything?

As for the religious landlord, I believe she can decorate her property anyway she desires. It is up to you to not support what she is doing by not doing business with her. Maybe you and others could protest her actions by finding another place to live.

If you really want to cause a confrontation then decorate your property, leased or otherwise, with refutations of religious symbols. Then if she forces you to remove these objects you may have a case.

Don't know how I missed these responses. Sorry.

I should clarify: it's not the _landlord_ who is decorating the place, it's the sort of informal *manageress*. (The building's landlord is a recent Chinese immigrant who could care less about Christmas.) The manageress, however, is a devout Xtian, and is decorating entirely out of her own motives. I believe that legally, she has no more (or less) right to decorate the common areas of the building than do I. I'm just wondering if there's a law about displaying religious items in common spaces that relates to this. Anyone?
